DDP® Research Results

Program & Protocol

Wolf Trax conducts one of the most extensive research and evaluation programs for micronutrients. Spanning many countries, soil conditions, climatic conditions and crops, we put our products to the test. Our data shows that Wolf Trax DDP micronutrients are designed to work under the toughest conditions, and they work consistently, regardless of crop or geography.

About the @farmtested research program

Wolf Trax products undergo some of the most extensive testing of any micronutrient products on the market today. Our products are tested for stability, efficacy and compatibility in the lab and field.

Through our @farmtested research and evaluation program, you can be assured of the following.

Our products are tested under a variety of conditions on a variety of crops. Wolf Trax products are tested around the world. Trialing is currently occurring in at least a dozen countries including Australia, Canada, the U.S., and several countries in the European Union. We continue to expand our research into new geographical areas.

Our products are tested by third-party researchers. Wolf Trax products are tested by both private and public researchers. This ensures we have a broad range of information about our products. Strict research protocols are followed in the development and testing of all Wolf Trax products. Before our products go into field-scale testing, they undergo multi-year, multi-site, replicated small plot trials. We make sure there are statistically significant benefits before we bring a product to market.

Our products are tested under field conditions. To ensure that Wolf Trax micronutrients will work in your customers’ fields, field-scale, side-by-side trials using farmers’ own equipment and crop management systems have been conducted since 1998. During the growing season, tissue samples are taken at regular intervals to confirm that Wolf Trax products are addressing nutrient deficiencies.

Our products are tested under the most challenging conditions. Wolf Trax products are tested under a wide range of climatic conditions – some of which are extremely challenging. We test on light and heavy soils, in cold soils where crop emergence is slow, and in searing heat where crop safety is a concern. We also test over a wide range of soil pH (as high as 8.2). High pH soils tend to complicate a plant’s ability to take up micronutrients. Wolf Trax products are proven to work under these conditions.

Micronutrients tend to be less available to the plant in higher pH soils. Serious issues regarding micronutrient availability are more common at soil pH above 7.0.

Our products demonstrate a successful track record. Wolf Trax has one of the most successful records for new product registrations due in large part to the cleanliness of our products, as well as the strict protocol of our R&D team.

Our products are stability tested. In addition to testing the agronomic performance of Wolf Trax products through our @farmtested program, we also test the stability of the physical product itself. An extensive evaluation program, to ensure robust formulations that provide superior mixing and efficacy, is utilized when it comes to manufacturing Wolf Trax micronutrients. We have conducted many on-site blending trials in batch and volumetric blenders with both independent retailers and larger retail networks. Our testing has shown that when blended with granular fertilizer, the DDP micronutrient remains thoroughly adhered to the fertilizer prill. In foliar fertilizer, it stays in suspension under agitation. With respect to mixability, tests done by the Prairie Agricultural Machinery Institute (PAMI) show that Wolf Trax micronutrients mix well up to pH 9 and water temperatures as low as 3oC, or 37oF.

This data shows the variance of a Wolf Trax DDP micronutrient coated onto a nitrogen blend. The bottom line shows the normal variance of nitrogen content when a dry fertilizer blend is handled. The top line shows the variance in the levels of DDP in the blend. As the blend travels from the blender to the truck to the seeder, the DDP micronutrient stays blended evenly throughout. The evenness of the blend stays true right through to the field.

Our products are compatibility tested. The ability to mix Wolf Trax products with pesticides is a valuable benefit that saves time and money. We regularly screen our micronutrient products with a variety of herbicides, fungicides and insecticides in tank-mixes in order to provide the best information possible about this dynamic area of agronomy. This testing goes beyond simple compatibility tests. On-going field-testing on the in-tank compatibility and efficacy of mixes is done to ensure crop protection is not compromised.

The Wolf Trax approach to research

We take seriously our job of correcting deficiencies and ensuring that a grower’s crop can gain access to the micronutrients it needs. We make sure that our foliar and soil-applied products will correct deficiencies, regardless of conditions. With every trial we run, we take tissue tests at regular intervals to confirm that the needs of the crop are being met so that the grower has the opportunity to maximize yield potential.
