Foliar Feeding Corn With Boron Fertilizer Can Increase Yield

If you are striving for high-yielding corn, now is the time to finalize plans for foliar feeding your crop. Have you considered including boron fertilizer products? According to a study conducted by Fred Below at the University of Illinois in 2013 looking at how boron fertilizer products contribute to corn yield, a foliar application of Wolf Trax® Boron DDP® at tasseling could be a smart investment.

The experiment looked at eight different fertility treatments applied to corn at several stages throughout the growing season, starting with a preplant base of 180 lbs N per acre. To determine the true value of foliar boron fertilizer products, the trial compared two similar treatments using Wolf Trax Boron DDP:

1)      Treatment A received Wolf Trax Boron DDP @ 7 oz/ac mixed in liquid fertilizer at the V4 stage

2)      Treatment B received the same V4 application, plus a foliar application of Wolf Trax Boron DDP at the Vt growing stage.

A significant yield difference was seen when Wolf Trax Boron DDP was foliar applied on tasseling corn during the Vt stage; due to increases  to individual kernel weight. This suggests that supplemental applications of boron during the corn crop’s reproductive growth stages can positively impact kernel fill – key to sustaining high corn yields. In fact, compared to treatment A, the added foliar application of Wolf Trax Boron DDP increased corn yield by 9 bushels per acre[1]!
